Polish Mathematician Stefan Banach said "mathematics is the most beautiful and most powerful creation of the human spirit." I prefer the term elegant instead of beautiful but, hey, that's just splitting hairs.
This site is meant to be a repository of online tools that teachers and parents can use to help out their students and children in the quest to inspire and improve their mathematical skills. And I know how much of a battle that can be. Growing up, I hated math but I kept progressing to the next level because I was decent at it. When I started college I had a pre-calculus teacher who somehow made me realize how interesting math can be - this was in 2002 so I don't even remember what exactly he did - but it just clicked and I've loved math ever since. I do believe that mathematics is elegant and, as the basis of so many other subject areas, I do believe that it is powerful. And that is why I want to teach it. Seeing others gain that realization, all of a sudden "getting it," and watching the fear or disgust with math turn to appreciation - that is a thing of true beauty and power. - Darrell
